Property Description

The house is in Tite Street, Chelsea. Tite street was an artist’s community in the 1880s, where the writer, Oscar Wilde and such great19th C painters as John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler lived and worked. The house is one of the few remaining original Chelsea studio houses, built for the artist John Collier in the 1880s, and it is full of old features. Its greatest glory is the first floor studio room, with huge high windows, fireplace, original wood parquet floors and a raised, balconied dressing room where the artist’s models used to get changed. ( Now a large flat screen TV and play station 4 are also installed). Another sitting room adjoins this on the same floor; there is also a conservatory, equipped with a working bar and undercounter fridge/ freezers.

This is a family house with six floors and two staircases. It is much wider than most London houses, though narrowing towards the top. On the ground floor , the high-ceilinged and generous hall gives onto a large family room, then a kitchen with more culinary equipment than anyone is likely to need. This leads into a dining room (seats 8-10 ), with its original part-stained glass windows that open onto the quiet street.

The rooms are high-ceilinged and most of them are filled with light. The bedrooms have views onto the Thames and the tall green trees of Battersea Park. All have been recently redecorated, the beds are new and extremely comfortable, and the bathrooms have showers as well as baths. The master bedroom adjoins a big, light study/dressing room/ yoga room with an embarrassingly large amount of cupboards for clothes.

At the back there is a wide paved garden with a venerable Mulberry tree in the middle of it and a basketball hoop at the side.

The house is full of books and pictures, but it is primarily a family house. It’s a very child-friendly place with comfortable sofas and chairs and lots of crannies to explore. We brought up three children here and loved the close proximity of Battersea park, with its children’s zoo and playground and lake and acres of grass. The street is very quiet but five minutes away you have the fashionable King’s road and Sloane Square, where there are shops, restaurants, cinemas and excellent transport links. The West End, Bond Street and Knightsbridge are very near to here, as are the major museums and London’s Theaters. We have two good bikes, which you are welcome to use.

To look after the house and you, we are lucky to have an excellent, friendly house manager and housekeepers, all of whom have worked for us for years. They will clean the house, do laundry, and shop for provisions. They all live out and do not work in the evenings.
We have access to the private tennis courts at the top of the road.
